mindfulness
“Mindfulness” is a common translation of a term from Buddhist psychology that means “awareness” or “bare attention.” Essentially, it involves bringing your attention to the present moment: this time and this place. My understanding is that it can’t be done “incorrectly.” It’s not about trying to push away thoughts or sensations but learning to notice and sit with what’s there.
Some people find this a helpful practice to incorporate into the therapy process. Especially with problems such as anxiety and trauma, mindfulness can be a way of learning to sit with your experience so that, over time, it can become less distressing.
We can talk about whether incorporating mindfulness practice into your therapy sessions could be beneficial.
